1. How would you describe your community’s passion and spirit for hockey?

The Bay Arena in Bay Roberts is one of the most used stadiums in the province. Available ice time is very limited with the doors opening every morning at 6:00AM with groups/leagues/recreational users there until 12:00AM. The Bay Arena Minor Hockey Association has 330+ kids registered in its program this year and rest assured there is a tournament at the building almost every weekend. There is 3 recreation leagues and countless groups who rent the ice on a weekly basis for those who are looking for a game, with player ages ranging from 19 - 88 years old. The Bay Arena is also home to Moore Frost CBN Junior Stars since 1998. This team has a rich history with 3 league championships and 3 provincial championships under their belts, they fill the stadium every Friday night as fans watch some of the best hockey in the province. Recently the stadium have played host to the Tri-Pen Osprey Midget and Bantam teams as there home arena, proving that this stadium is the go to place to play..

2. What arena project would most benefit from the prize money? Please specifically identify how the $100,000 might be used to upgrade your arena and the impact this would have on your community

With a building that is 30+ years old there are some obvious repairs that are needed. The roof leaks and the lighting in many areas of the building is in need of upgrades. These repairs come at a significant cost to the Town of Bay Roberts and events in the past had to have been postponed/delayed or even canceled due to water on the floor/ice surface. Just recently a HS hockey tournament final was delayed almost an hour due to a water leak on the ice. This rec facility is the cornerstone to not only the recreation dept but to the Town of Bay Roberts and surrounding communities. A fire last year shut the building down for roughly 8 weeks and the impact to the recreation program and the economy was felt for months after. Repairs to the roof would allow the facility to not have to worry about what is happening outside and instead, concentrate on providing quality events with the first class service that people receive the minute they walk through the doors.

3. Why should your community be the next Kraft Hockeyville?

After 30+ years of the stadium being operated by a Board of Directors, in September of 2017 the Town of Bay Roberts took over the day to day operations of the facility due to the major capital costs associated with many of the needed upgrades. In December, the former chairperson of the board passed away, and to honor such a outstanding volunteer all players in the minor hockey association will wear a decal on their helmets with his initials on it for the remainder of the season. His passion for the stadium and hockey was felt by anyone who met him and for The Bay Arena to be awarded Kraft Hockeyville would be a great way to help continue his legacy. He loved nothing more then to come to the rink and see the stands full of cheering fans but most important to him was that every child had an equal opportunity to live out their dreams of playing hockey. For children to witness a NHL game at this facility would be something that would make him and his family very proud..
